SUMMER AT HOLY FAMILY SCHOOL

Summer Camps 2011

WELCOME TO MAGIC CARPET  2011

We are so excited to announce our plans for Magic Carpet 2011.  Again we have discovered many new and exciting adventures to immerse your children in fascinating cultures while still having lots of summer fun!

June 28-30  RUSSIA  Join us for “Espionage”, an interactive adventure at  5-Wits at Patriot Place.  We will go head to head with the nefarious Cabal Corporation to destroy leaked blueprints and expose the mole in the organization.  We will solve puzzles, conquer challenges and deal with our mistakes.  Our students will be grouped according to age-younger kids will have a gentle but challenging adventure-older kids will have the adventure of a lifetime.  Our plans also include a Russian Food Tour “From Russia With Love”.  We will participate in a culinary adventure, tasting Russian specialties such as blintzes and pirozhki(dumplings)- maybe even caviar-as we explore the streets and shops of Washington Square in Brookline.

July 12-14  CARIBBEAN ISLANDS  Join us for a fabulous pool party at the wave pool at the Cape Codder Hotel in Hyannis, followed by a visit to the Chatham Fish Pier where we will visit with the seals as they follow the fishing boats into ChathamHarbor and leap out of the water for their lunch.  We will see the fishing boats unload their catch and observe the process of sorting and packing the fish into refrigerated trucks for transport to local fish markets.  There are 2 pools at the CapeCodder –gentle waves for little kids and surf size for older kids.  We will have a picnic at Chatham Fish Pier.  Next day-“20,000 Leagues” at 5-Wits at Patriot Place.  Our kids will stumble upon a secret entrance to the Nautilus, the mythical submarine from Jules Verne’s classic novel.  Hidden away for over 100 years, the Nautilus houses countless secrets and mysteries and it will be our job to explore the ship and return to the surface to tell the tale.

July 19-21  GREECE In keeping with great student interest in all things Greek as a result of the Percy Jackson series of books, we will visit the Museum of Fine Arts “Artful Adventures” where we will view the Greek sculpture and bronze exhibits with a knowledgeable guide  followed by a class where we will create our own sculptures with an MFA artist.  This activity was very popular last year when we explored French Impressionists and Egyptian  clayworks.  We will be immersed in Greek music and dance with Lykeion.   Greek dancers wearing custom Greek outfits will demonstrate and teach our kids the moves.  We will enjoy Greek food and hopefully a Greek Festival-more to come on Greece.

July 26-28  THAILAND Join us for a fascinating visit to a Buddhist temple.  Led by Buddhist monks we will learn some Thai language and dance, play some traditional Thai musical instruments, sample Thai food and learn a bit about Meditation and Theravada Buddhism.  Rainforests are everywhere in Thailand so it’s off to the Rainforest Café for an educational tour of the rainforest exhibits where we will learn about rainforests in Southeast Asia, habitats of threatened and endangered fish and animals and conservation efforts particularly in Thailand to protect the planet’s fragile ecosystems. Lunch is included.   Because elephants are plentiful in Thailand, we hope to conclude with a visit to the elephant biome at the zoo.

August 2-4  Boston  Our adventures in everyone’s favorite city will potentially include a visit to the Commonwealth Museum and/or the JFK Museum, a private tour of the workings of  our government at the State House, a trolley tour of Boston, a Charles Riverboat cruise or Boston Harbor cruise and a  show at the Planetarium at the Science Museum.  We are still deciding about Boston because there are so many fabulously exciting places to visit.

***We will travel in school busses and we will use public transportation as much as possible(ferry and/or commuter rail to Boston).  Children will provide their own lunches and snacks except on days where I have noted that lunch is included.

Days and times each week  are Tuesday and Wednesday 8-3 and Thursday 8-Noon.  Tuition and Expenses remain the same as they have been for the last 3 years -$180 per child per week ($120. tuition and $60 expenses).  You may register your child for any number of weeks you choose.  Children who attend all 5 weeks will receive a reduced tuition rate of $500. ($100. per week) for the entire program-expenses remain the same at $60. per week.  Siblings who attend the same weeks will receive a reduced tuition rate of $100. per week for all children after the first.  Expenses remain the same at $60. per week per child.
